Second Life is owned by everyone with input. Geneology, science fiction etc. More client interaction than in the past.

Libraries can present services to another generation who are familiar with new technolgies as blogs, You Tube, Bebo etc which they are using on a daily basis.

To be able to present information/provide the means for feedback for some rural and smaller libraries is a challenge. There is a need for expertise/ further training and most importantly the time to complete.

American Library Association - using You Tube for comments from supporters
Communities of Practice UK - sharing ideas, problems and expertise with forums
East Refrewshire Scotland - symposium for services e.g. visit by Jodi Picolt
ALIA Symposium - with videos, photographs etc being shared.
New Grist - virtual community sharing ideas on the internet.
British Library - comments from fans.
Rotorua Public Library using Bebo to promote services

All ways to use social networking to promote services and add comments by users or future users of library services all over the world. This can be applied to big and large libraries alike.

The use of Google Docs and other sharing software has the potential to promote more discussion and sharing of ideas.

Individuals are able to make suggestions to a document without having to be physically present i.e. due to time constraints or with having to travel long distances as with travelling in rural areas to the city.

Meeting face to face is most benefical due to being able to bounce ideas from one another but this is not always able to be arranged.

Free software such as Google Docs and Zamzar provide the ability to share documents, edit anywhere.

Business people, students everyone is able to use these free software. Software such as speadsheets, chat, invoices.

Examples included are friends from college organising vacations, business people organising business details and even shopping lists with families.

Slideshare is like powerpoint software only this is being shared worldwide. Vacation slides like a trip to Fiji are great.

Library Finder with satellite images of locations of libraries is great.

Travature with its travel guides, restaurant reviews, photos etc is good for the questions about different countries, cultures and anyone planning a trip.

Kevin Clarkes Virtual Tourism gives an opportunity to be a "virtual tourist" from Bondi Beach with its beaches to a history tourist in Palmyra in Syria. The site even allows us to be a space tourist with the stars story.

Great way to experience an area without having to travel to the destination. Extra text information is also included and this is beneficial for information searches.

The use of hybrib web applications with images and maps is great.

Combining photo space with GPS locations can be used for the artist, amateur, business people, professionals alike.

Mashups can be used for crimespotting, cabspotting, in the marine industry e.g. microchip fish in the ocean and track their movement or for the artistic with postcard photos combined with a map of an area to give an emotive feel or experience of the world.

Big huge lab can be used to combine digital photographs to create posters etc.

Google maps can be used to to search for areas and also businesses (like the white pages) e.g. finding pizza places in your town

British Library's London Life over the ages with its maps from each timeperiod and links with maps from the Library's Collection linked to the time is wonderful. This has a potential for any local studies collection to link the timeperiod to primary source materials.

The Boulder Public Library has a number of links for teenagers.

"The Funkylamas funky teen revue has two teenage customers who talk about the latest movies they have seen, books they enjoy with ratings e.g. Young Adult and who would enjoy reading the resource as a 10 year old neighbour up to a 12 year old.

This is direct feedback on the success of the library and how client are using the resources and providing recommendations for other clients and potential clients.

Podcasts involve many of your senses and keep you entertained while providing information. Sound and space age graphics!

Listening to a story like Little Bear Lost from the Denver Public Library and the Orange Country Library Service or Library News on LibVib is great.

From the British Library Evelyn Waughs extracts provides a real insight into the author as a person with references to where the author travelled during their lifetime and the author speaking themself.

From the ABC RollerCoaster interview with Andy Griffith was very funny and gave a tour which would appeal to adults and children in selecting books from Andy Griffiths and Terry Denton.

Like any information it needs to be filtered out "the good" from the "bad". The Answerboards provide a "brainstrust" (like the Einstein Factor on ABC TV) for answers. A tool to extend our reference expertise and resources. Great for rating books/bookclub resources in the Library

The Answers given by Librarians on the Answer Board Librarian Wiki are in detail.

Individuals are directed to internet resources, book, audio or practical advice. Looking at a number of responses individuals gave 5 star ratings to the librarians.

As mentioned on the website, this demonstrates librarians being "Active and Dynamic" and supporting the use of both web 2.0 and the local library to answer information questions.

Technorati and Librarything

Looked for nswpln2008 but had no hits with either the basic or more advanced search?
Had hits for the search for bookmobile.

Librarything with the ratings, sort tags and reviews with no commercial bias but a social focus is great for bookclubs.

I've viewed the account set up but unable to add to list. Beans Gallipoli is a great read relating back to his WWI diaries with photographic evidence.

I wanted to add two books I've recently read People of the Book by Geraldine Brooks and Eye of the Jade by Diane Wei Liang both Novels but based on factual information. People of the Book set in a variety of settings in the past and present and Eye of the Jade set in China. Excellent reads.

Technorati being a search tool for blogs is like using Google for searching for general information.
Searching with a general search and more advanced search gave different results.
Searching Bookmobile with a general search gave 395 results with the advanced search 663.
Search result gave information relevant to the library environment.
One article Bookmobile by mail was similar to my experience providing resources in a rural area. Another Digital Publishing and Bookmobiles links with experiences with audio books etc.

Listings with the tag cloud in the special account created for the exercise was easily viewed. The link to related tags like a see also reference.

Sutherlands tag cloud had some great links with family history, the law and health which would be beneficial to look at further for reference searching.

The first screen for the Cleveland site used the term bookmarked for the listings for the tag cloud. When the listings are viewed you are then linked to the more familiar view for the tag cloud.

Rock and Roll Library is the You Tube Video I selected.
The video was a library graduate special project which transforms a guy. He finds everything about rock and roll in the library and to end the session he has a jam session in the library. We have great "jam" sessions in our library already which encourages the teenagers to borrow books in our music area.

Great rap by the young adults of the area who visit the library.
People are interviewed and state they like the library for the homework help, the computers and a place to study. Great way to have the customers involved in their local library.
Q and ANJ Open Late Night
The approach of a takeaway, late night access to the Library (like McDonalds) was unique and fun. Librarians are available 24 hours a day 7 days a week via email for assistance.

Broken Hill Olive Riley returns to Broken Hill
"Extracts from a film called all about Olive" showcases the life of Olive who is now 107. Wonderful for giving a first hand account of the past and in the film relates her childhood to present day children. Of personal interest as my mother comes from Broken Hill and I worked in Broken Hill.

Interesting You Tube Video about how we need to think about information. Information having no fixed form in the digital age. Information is being created by everyone.

You Tube and Google Videos
The links to other videos similar to the one you are viewing was helpful. The wider screens or "black" boxed view with Google Videos reminded me of some foreign films I've seen. You focus more on the content. The ratings for the videos also reminded me of a film or book review.

I did not know the many ways you are able to use Lego blocks (or brickworks) in an animated form. Seeing "Monthy Python and the Holy Grail" and "Lego Indiana Jones" was fun.

Slightly daunting to begin with when formatting the information in code and understanding the conventions but once I completed the entry was wonderful.

Being part of a group to contribute ideas for a Wiki is great. You realise libraries big and small experience the same type of customer both the positive and the "difficult".

State Library of Tasmania's Catalog (as a number of people have commented) has great potential. I liked the brief description of resources. When gathering resources for indepth information requests a brief summary is handy.

Contributing to the Wikis is like a group brainstorming session. Everyone has the opportunity to contribute their ideas and information e.g. German website for Wikipedia being more accurate than some published sources is amazing.

Great for having explanations of different subject categories for the library e.g. Biographies and examples of books, resources in the collection.

Book Lovers Wiki
Wonderful idea for bookclubs with reviews and if the individual is shy can be anonymous. I've held bookclubs and this extends the posting of reviews on the library website with more comments.

Wookieepedia
For the Star Wars Fans. Up to date information e.g. new TV series coming up in August 2008. Star Wars if always popular for borrowers.

RSS and Newsreaders

RSS and newsreaders are great for gathering information together and pooling the ideas of individuals. A global sharing of news and ideas.

In the Library Environment this is another tool for finding current information e.g. to add to search engines like Google. Library staff are able to keep up to date with current thinking.

This is wonderful for all age groups to be able to share their views on different subjects, life and more. Blogs are one means of doing this on an informal basis, more like verbally communicating.
